We’ve been in Texas for a few weeks now, and we’re still waiting on the bulk of our stuff to arrive. While I’m waiting not so patiently, I figure I should start a project to keep my hands busy. The boys’ playroom needs a major makeover! It’s a perfect distraction, and it’s productive. Win-win!
As I said, the bulk of our stuff won’t be here for three to four weeks due to the truck having mechanical issues. Total bummer! Thankfully, our beds and the boys’ stuff came on the first truck, so we’re making due, and now they know me at the local coffee shops. đ
Speaking of the boys’ stuff, we lived with the mess above for a few days and that was more than enough. Ha! Even my hubby, who is pretty tolerant of messiness, said we needed to bring in some major storage solutions. Immediately!
The Playroom Makeover Design Plans
Before we even moved, I’d been thinking about this space, what we needed the space to do, and how we wanted it to feel.
Our playroom needs to have the following:
- storage for both the toys the boys play with daily, but also the toys that I rotate out every few weeks
- book storage and lots of it
- a place to hang their dress-up clothes
- magnet board
- a place to make art
- a space to run and jump
- and a cozy spot for momma and daddy to sit
It’s a heavy-hitting list of needs, for sure! We also want it to feel bright and colorful with touches of whimsy.
So with all of this in mind, I created a design board. This always helps me visualize how everything will work together in the space.
This is where I’ve land (for nowđ). Most of this stuff we already have, but we are adding a few bookshelves and some comfy floor tiles.
The Space
We took the formal dining space which is 10’x14′ and converted it into a playroom. Our family eats at the table in the kitchen, so this is just a better use of the space for us.
The walls, ceiling, and trim are all getting a fresh coat of paint.
Painting the ceiling
I had to share this picture. Wow! I just cannot believe the difference in color, and how much brightness the white ceiling adds to this space. In this house, most of the walls and ceilings are the same off-white color. It’s pretty, but the white ceiling looks so clean and crisp!
Walls and Trim
Stay with me for a minute, while watching Curious George with my boys, I noticed that all of the apartments and houses have colorful trim and doors, and neutral walls. I am loving that look! I knew our playroom would be the perfect space to try to create that vibe in our house.
The color I chose for the walls is Whipped Cream by Behr, it’s a bright and neutral white – not too warm and not too cool, just right. Then for the trim, I went with Recycled Glass by Behr. Now depending on the light throughout the day, this color can look more green, blue, or gray, but it always reads neutral to me.
If I’m being honest, I wasn’t loving the trim at this point and I started to second-guess my choice. I loved the color of the trim, but I really didn’t like it paired with the gray that was on the walls before. But the more Whipped Cream I got on the walls, I knew it was going to look great in our space.
I completely love how this combination turned out! I think Big Wrig approves of the fresh new look, too.
Here it is finished. I know I’m repeating myself, but cannot get over how bright it is now! The boys are going to be thrilled. I can’t wait to see their reactions.
And, did you catch the sneak peek of our new flooring? I’ll share more on that when we finish Phase 2 of our playroom makeover. I can’t wait! đ
Hope you enjoyed it! What do you think of the colorful trim?
